Wylie TX Roofing: Hail Claims, Leak Repair and Roof Replacement Between the Lakes

On the afternoon of 11 April 2016, one long-lived supercell tracked across the northern suburbs of the Metroplex and unloaded on Wylie. The National Weather Service’s own account of that storm, filed in the NOAA storm database, does not hedge: at least 80 percent of the town of Wylie was damaged by the hail.

The stones were measured as they fell. Baseball size, 2.75 inches, at 5:12 pm. Three and a half inches beside Wylie East High School three minutes after that. Softball size, 4.25 inches, in the southeast of town at 5:17, where the Weather Service recorded that the roofs of some homes and businesses were penetrated by the hail and that people were hurt by breaking glass. Then at 5:19 a stone that photogrammetry put at five and a quarter inches across, possibly six — the biggest hail logged anywhere in Collin County in the last ten years, and it landed here.

NOAA’s records place the damage from that single storm in Wylie at roughly $215 million. A decade on, the roofs that went up in the months afterwards are themselves running out of years. That is the roofing situation in this city, and it is why this page is mostly about hail.

How Often Wylie Actually Gets Hit

Hail talk is easy to dismiss as a roofer’s sales pitch, so here are the numbers from the NOAA Storm Events Database rather than from an industry blog. Between 2016 and 2025, Collin County logged 310 hail reports — about 31 a year.

• 265 of those 310 — 85 percent — measured an inch or more, roughly where hail stops bouncing off an asphalt shingle and starts fracturing the mat underneath. Call it 26 damaging-size reports a year.
• 63 reports were two inches or bigger, about six a year.
• 86 percent of it fell between March and June. April is the worst month at 30 percent, March close behind at 28. The spring cliché is, in this case, simply true.
• The same decade brought 111 damaging-wind events in Collin County, peak measured gust 74 knots — around 85 mph.

The reason is ordinary meteorology, not bad luck. Every spring the dryline sets up west of the Metroplex, where dry desert air runs into humid Gulf air ahead of fronts coming off the Rockies. Storms firing along that boundary carry updrafts deep enough to hold a stone aloft while it keeps growing, and Wylie sits downwind of them. Statewide, the Insurance Information Institute counted 902 hail events in Texas in 2025, more than any other state.

The most recent local reminder was 25 March 2025, when Wylie’s own fire department reported ping-pong-ball hail drifted four to six inches deep at Fire Station 1 on South Ballard Street. Nothing exotic — just a Tuesday in March.

Why So Many Wylie Roofs Come Due at the Same Time

Wylie grew up almost entirely inside that hail record. The city held 15,132 people in 2000 and 57,526 by 2020, with a 174 percent jump in the first of those decades alone, and the housing went up to match. About three quarters of Wylie’s homes were built in 2000 or later, and 82.6 percent of them are single-family detached. Barely four percent predate 1970.

Nearly all of that was roofed in asphalt composition shingle, most of it builder grade. Those roofs are now fifteen to twenty-five years old — at or past the working life of a three-tab or entry-level architectural shingle in Texas sun — and every one has sat through 2016, 2019, 2021, 2022 and 2025. Heat and ultraviolet do quiet damage in between, cooking the binder out of the mat until the shingle turns brittle and sheds granules. A roof that scraped through a marginal hail event is a worse bet next time.

The exception is the older core around Ballard Avenue: a small share of the city, different rooflines, sometimes a second layer of shingle waiting to come off.

In a city built the way Wylie was built, replacement is the bulk of what we do — but a birthday is not a verdict, and we will say so on your driveway if that is the honest answer. Plenty of twenty-year-old roofs here have seasons left in them, and plenty of twelve-year-old roofs took a beating in March 2025.

Knowing Wylie Well Enough to Find Your House

Wylie is a railroad town that became a suburb. It took its present name in 1886, when the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe came through, and it still had only 3,152 people in 1980. The red-brick storefronts along Ballard Avenue, between State Highway 78 and Brown Street, are what is left of that town; everything else is 2000s and 2010s subdivision reaching out toward the water. Locals call it the city between the lakes — Lavon Lake and East Fork Park about five miles north, Lake Ray Hubbard to the south.

People here navigate by SH 78 southwest into Garland and northeast toward Lavon, by FM 544 across to Murphy and Plano, by FM 1378 — Country Club Road — past the Municipal Complex, and by FM 2514, Parker Road, up toward Lucas and McKinney. It is a city with a foot in three counties, mostly Collin but reaching into Dallas and Rockwall, which is why an address here can say Wylie while the children go to Wylie ISD, Garland ISD or Rockwall ISD depending on the street. Wylie is also home to the North Texas Municipal Water District.
