Roofing in Tomball, TX — From Old Town to the Newest Master-Planned Streets

Tomball is two places at once, and a roofer notices within a block. Inside the city limits sit about twelve thousand people and a compact downtown built around a restored railroad depot on South Elm Street. Outside them — which is where most of Tomball actually lives — you are in unincorporated Harris County, where the 77375 and 77377 ZIP codes hold roughly 118,000 residents who all write “Tomball, TX” on their mail.

Nearly every roof we are called to sits in that second Tomball: a master-planned section off FM 2920 or SH 249, or an acreage tract out toward Mueschke Road and Rose Hill. The town is Harris County, not Montgomery — Spring Creek, just north, is the county line — and it sits at the southwestern tip of the Piney Woods, which is why so many of these roofs live under loblolly pine and mature oak.

Two Tomballs, Two Different Roofing Jobs

The 1970s-to-1990s streets — brick ranches and early-suburban two-storeys — are usually on their second or third asphalt roof, often with legacy three-tab shingles and flashing details that were ordinary practice then and are not now.

The early-2000s master-planned sections are where the volume sits. Villages of Northpointe put roughly 1,350 homes across 560 acres and 25 sections; Wildwood at Northpointe went in off SH 249 in the same era; Lakewood Grove’s median build year lands around 2000. Those homes still wear original architectural shingles now twenty to twenty-five years old — on the Gulf Coast, the end of a service life rather than the middle. Inverness Estates, built 2005 to 2019 at Grand Parkway and FM 2920, is arriving there section by section.

New Tomball is a different job again. Amira, on 554 acres of a former Egyptian Arabian horse ranch off Mueschke Road, and Raburn Reserve on the east side are still filling in; those roofs are inside their warranty years, so when one leaks it is storm damage or a detail that was never right, not age. On the acreage — Willowcreek Ranch alone is 750 gated acres of one-acre-plus lots — the roofs run to complicated geometry, long valleys, standing-seam metal and designer shingles.

What the Gulf Coast Actually Does to a Tomball Roof

This is not a North Texas hail market, and treating it like one leads to the wrong repair. The nearest long-record station, Bush Intercontinental about twenty miles southeast, normals out at 51.84 inches of rain a year and a record high of 109°F. Wind, water, heat and humidity are what age a roof here.

Wind is the headline, and 2024 made the point twice in eight weeks. The 16 May derecho produced a measured 78 mph gust at Highlands and an EF1 tornado in southern Cypress; on 8 July, Hurricane Beryl came ashore near Matagorda as a Category 1 and tracked up the western side of the metro, cutting power to more than 2.7 million customers. Neither is a Tomball statistic — but northwest Harris County was underneath both.

Wind does not attack the middle of a roof. It attacks the perimeter: rakes, eaves, ridge, and the first courses above the starter strip. Once a starter course or a length of drip edge lifts, air gets under the field and takes shingles off in sequence, ridge caps and pipe boots first. Sealant strips that have cooked through fifteen Texas summers do not re-bond once broken — which is how a roof looks untouched from the driveway and is unsealed across a whole slope. Then the rain finds it, at valleys, flashing, brittle pipe boots and roof-to-wall transitions. Low-pitch porch and patio-cover sections drain slowly and are the leak point we see most on Houston-area homes.

Heat, humidity and trees finish the job. Long 95°F-plus summers thermal-cycle asphalt into granule loss and dried-out sealant. The black streaks on north-facing slopes here are Gloeocapsa magma, an algae that thrives in Gulf Coast humidity; algae-resistant shingles with copper granules are the durable answer. Pine and oak add limbs abrading the shingles beneath them, needles packing valleys and gutters so they hold water, and limb fall in tropical wind.

Hail does fall here, mostly in spring, and we handle hail claims. But the Gulf Coast is not the hail belt that Dallas–Fort Worth is. On a Tomball roof, wind and water do the damage.

Roof Leak Repair Before the Ceiling Tells You

A stain on a bedroom ceiling is late information. The earlier signals are duller: a pipe boot with a split collar, granules piling up under the downspout, a lifted ridge cap, daylight in the attic, a rust streak under the decking around a nail.

The signs are consistent: shingles that crack when lifted, bare mat showing through, seal strips gripping nowhere, leaks in several planes, or a storm that unsealed far more than it removed.

That is the conversation the Northpointe-era sections are having now. A full roof replacement is also the moment to fix the ventilation and flashing that shortened the last roof’s life — on an attic that runs Texas-hot five months a year, that is why the next roof reaches its number.

Why We Like Working in Tomball

Tomball began as Peck, a stop on the railroad, and was renamed in December 1907 for Congressman Thomas Henry Ball. Oil came in on 27 May 1933, and a 1935 agreement with Humble Oil handed residents ninety years of free water and natural gas — odd enough to land the place in “Ripley’s Believe It or Not.” German families who settled here in the 1840s left the other legacy: the German Heritage Festival that fills Depot Plaza and Old Town.
