Celina counted 16,739 residents at the 2020 census. The Census Bureau’s 2025 estimate put it at 64,427 — a rise of roughly 24.6 percent in the twelve months to July 2025 alone, the fastest growth of any American city above 20,000 people. Practically none of that arrived as old housing. It arrived as new rooftops, thousands of them, across 48 square miles straddling Collin and Denton counties about 35 miles north of downtown Dallas.

That one fact shapes nearly every roofing conversation we have in 75009. Celina is not a town of tired roofs waiting their turn. It is a town of young roofs — almost all of them the original shingle the builder specified — under some of the most active hail in the United States. Put those together and you get the situation Celina homeowners keep landing in: a roof nowhere near old enough to replace, and an insurance claim anyway.

Two Very Different Kinds of Celina Roof

There is an older Celina, and it is small. The town was established in 1876 and incorporated in 1907, and around 1910 a resident named J. Fred Smith rebuilt the wooden business section into the brick buildings that still ring the square; Celina has been a Texas Main Street City since 1996. Those streets are a different job from the prairie subdivisions — older framing, older decking, and a repair history nobody wrote down.

Then there is the Celina almost everybody lives in. Light Farms alone covers 1,070 acres and was platted for 3,059 single-family lots, development starting in 2012 and build-out running toward 2027. Mustang Lakes went in at the southern city limits off Frontier Parkway at Waterview Trail, around a lake and some twenty acres of park. Cambridge Crossing, Mosaic, Creeks of Legacy, Sutton Fields, Lilyana, Carter Ranch and a dozen more followed. If your house went up on that wave, the roof over it is five to fifteen years old and still the one the builder chose.

Hail Is Why Your Street Keeps Getting New Roofs

Here is the number worth quoting. Drawing on NOAA Storm Prediction Center data, the Insurance Information Institute recorded 902 major hail events in Texas during 2025 — more than any other state, well over double second-place Kansas at 375, out of 5,432 nationally. “Major” there means hailstones an inch across or larger — roughly the size at which a stone stops bouncing off an asphalt shingle and starts fracturing the mat underneath.

What we will not do is hand you a Collin County hail statistic. Plenty of roofing sites publish precise-sounding local hail numbers; chase them and they trace back to other contractors’ marketing pages, not to any primary source. The honest version: North Texas sits in the stretch of the country that gets the most large hail, spring is far and away the worst of it, and hail rarely arrives alone — straight-line wind and rain driven sideways under the tabs come with the same storm line. Under all of it runs the slow Texas load, months of heat and UV cooking the binder out of a shingle.

Builder-Grade Shingles, and the Class 3 Conversation

Production builders, almost by definition, specify the cheapest shingle that satisfies the code and the manufacturer’s warranty. On handover day the roof looks superb. Eight years and two hail seasons later, the difference between that shingle and a heavier one stops being academic.

Impact-resistant shingles are graded by how they survive a steel ball dropped under the UL 2218 test, Class 4 being the toughest rating. They are heavier and dearer than the standard builder shingle, and in a market full of 2010s production roofs that trade-off is worth arguing out loud. The call we take most often after a rough week of weather is some version of “there is a brown ring on the ceiling and the roof looks completely fine.” From the driveway it usually does. Why We Like Working in Celina

Celina is centred on State Highway 289 — Preston Road, the same road that runs up through Plano, Frisco and Prosper — with the old downtown just west of it. FM 455 crosses east to west, though the council has approved realigning that route away from the square. The bigger change is still under construction: the Dallas North Tollway extension from US 380 to FM 428, about six miles through Prosper and Celina, three main lanes each way, begun in spring 2024 and planned to open by the end of 2027. The Collin County Outer Loop already has its western terminus here at Dallas Parkway.

What has not changed is the part people love. The brick storefronts around the square date from that 1910 rebuild; Founders Station Park sits a block east at 135 N. Louisiana Drive, and Old Celina Park is out at 12670 FM 428 with ball fields, a trail and catch-and-release lakes. Bobcat football is the town’s standing appointment — the historic field near downtown hosted varsity games from 1952 to 2018 and is becoming an amphitheater in a linear park along Doe Branch Creek, while the stadium that replaced it opened in 2019 with 6,500 seats.
