Anna, TX Roofers — Collin County Hail and a Town Full of Twenty-Year-Old Roofs

The most useful fact about roofing in Anna is a housing statistic, not a weather one. Of the roughly 8,100 housing units the Census Bureau counts here, about nine in ten went up in 2000 or later, a full third of them between 2000 and 2009. Many still wear the builder’s original shingles, now seventeen to twenty-six years old. The houses went up together, so the roofs wear out together.

Anna sits entirely in Collin County, eleven miles northeast of McKinney, with US 75 down its western side and SH 5 — Powell Parkway — through the middle. The Census Bureau ranked it the country’s fourth fastest-growing city over 20,000, at 16.9 percent between mid-2022 and mid-2023.

A Boomtown Whose First Roofs Are Coming Due

Break the Census Bureau’s American Community Survey figures into eras and three roofing conversations fall out. The 2000–2009 wave is a third of the city: production subdivisions still on original roofs, entry-grade shingle, original boots and step flashing, code-minimum ventilation. It all aged at the same rate, so a repair on one slope usually uncovers the same detail on the other three.

The 2010–2019 sections are another third, mid-life rather than old. Age is not their problem; one bad April is.

The 2020-and-later homes are close to a quarter and still inside warranty; when one leaks, the cause is storm damage or a bad installation detail, not age. Behind all three sits the historic core near the depot, where pre-1990 housing is a single-digit share of the city.

In North Texas, Hail Is the Whole Story

Texas leads the country for hail. The Insurance Information Institute, using National Weather Service data, counted 902 hail events in Texas in 2025 out of 5,432 nationwide; Kansas was second at 375.

Collin County has been at the centre of two of the worst. The Fort Worth office of the National Weather Service recorded the 11 April 2016 supercell reaching maximum intensity as it crossed into the county, setting the record hailstone for that forecast area at 5.25 inches; in Wylie, 80 percent of homes were affected. On 13 June 2012, hail to 4.25 inches fell across Dallas, Collin and Fannin counties.

Neither is an Anna statistic, but the record here clusters hard in spring, roughly March through June. Hail rarely arrives alone: supercells bring straight-line wind, which attacks the perimeter — rakes, eaves, ridge caps, the first courses above the starter strip. Anna sits roughly 250 miles from the Gulf, so hurricane language has no place on this page.

What Hail Does to a Roof

Most homeowners look for holes. Functional hail damage looks like a bruise instead: the stone knocks granules off a small circle and fractures the mat underneath. That roof may not leak for years, but its clock has been shortened.

The soft metals confess first, which is why an inspection that skips them is not an inspection. Vent caps, gutter faces, drip edge and flashing take clean dents that date and size a storm.

Age changes everything: a twenty-year-old roof gone brittle takes functional damage from stones a new roof shrugs off. That is the collision Anna is in, and why impact-rated shingles come up so often here.

Roof Repair and Leak Repair in Anna

A ceiling stain is late news; water has usually been tracking a rafter for weeks by then. The earlier signals are duller and cheaper: a split pipe-boot collar, granules under a downspout, a ridge cap sitting proud, daylight in the attic.

The signs are consistent: shingles that crack when lifted, bare mat showing, or a storm that unsealed far more than it removed.

Getting Around Anna

US 75, the Central Expressway, runs along the western edge, forty-five miles from Dallas. SH 5 — Powell Parkway — runs north to south through the middle, and FM 455, White Street in town, is the east–west arterial. FM 455 at US 75 is the retail node; Powell at White Street is the downtown crossroads.

Slayter Creek runs through town, and Slayter Creek Park is the big one. The Anna Depot downtown dates to 1885 and is described as the oldest extant railroad station in Texas. Most children here are in Anna ISD, with a small eastern sliver in Blue Ridge ISD.
